Sant’Erasmo Marina

The project is above all a landscape project, aimed at revitalising the dynamics that can “repopulate” this important stretch of Palermo’s urban coastline with functions and uses.

All the interventions, some already completed and others underway, will restore the symbiotic relationship between the people of Palermo and their sea, lost after the Second World War.

Until the Second World War, which marked a turning point in the previously symbiotic relationship between the city and the sea, the Sant’Erasmo waterfront was the city’s most important landing place outside the walls. Until then, the village of Sant’Erasmo was devoted to tuna fishing: extensive photographic records attest to its bustling activity. The abandonment and subsequent deterioration of the small harbour, a situation shared by the entire Palermo coastline, came to an end around ten years ago, when the Palermo Port Authority launched a major redevelopment of the municipal land within its port estate.
