PROPOSAL FOR THE REDEVELOPMENT OF PALERMO’S SOUTHERN COAST

The south coast and the entire area beyond the Oreto River are awaiting design solutions. This proposal, developed by the architects of the Balàd cultural association, aims to offer a series of ideas that can put the PUDM guidelines into practice by differentiating uses and functions according to environmental compatibility. The study also assesses the feasibility of the proposed interventions in collaboration with a public-private partnership. Feder Alberghi and Confcommercio, as representatives of the city’s active business stakeholders, have embraced the approach set out in this design vision so that Bandita will never again be excluded from the rest of the city and the political agenda.
The southern coast of Palermo epitomises the city’s untapped potential. The Maritime State Property Use Plan, currently awaiting approval, could provide a major opportunity to bring economic activity and investment to this part of Palermo. However, the plan needs a more coherent and legible design approach, one capable of attracting investors and giving them confidence in the viability of their investments. A critical look at this area, recognising its distinctive environmental and landscape qualities, means shifting the city’s centre of gravity, which for too many years has focused solely on the Historic Centre as its only potential draw.
